Welcome to Edgewood Middle School. I am Susan Hoffman, and I will be your child’s reading and language arts teacher this year. This is my seighth year as a member of the EMS faculty. My experience spans 27 years, all but two spent teaching sixth grade reading and language arts. I love sixth graders and look forward to an exceptional year with your child.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from The University of Cincinnati and my master’s degree in The Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. I also am a fellow of The Ohio Writing Project through Miami University. Each year, I pursue opportunities to improve my teaching and strive to serve your child to the best of my abilities. Last year I earned the designation as Master Teacher.
Teaching, to me, is the most remarkable profession. I take my commitment to you and your child very seriously. My goals are to promote a positive self-image in every student, to foster a learning environment which focuses on cooperation and respect for one another, and to individualize educational programs in order to maximize each child’s potential.
One mantra that I repeat to the students regularly is, "Reading is thinking!" Because I deeply believe this, students are asked to read for 20 minutes 5 nights per week from either a self-selected or assigned novel. Students are then required to write about their reading in their Reader's Notebooks biweekly. This assignment is in place all year and makes up a large part of the quarterly grade.
One way that we can best serve your child’s needs is through communication. My email address hoffmas@edgewood.k12.oh.us. Please feel free to email me at any time with any questions or concerns you may have. Also, you can always call the school and leave a voice mail message or a note with the office. I thank you for your support. Together we can help your child to have a successful sixth grade year.
